McCarthy Threatens FBI Director Wray With Contempt Again

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress again on Tuesday, saying that Wray has until the end of the day to comply with a subpoena for documents related to the FBI’s investigation into Hunter Biden.

“Today is the deadline for Director Wray to comply with the subpoena,” McCarthy said in a statement. “If he does not, I will move to hold him in contempt of Congress.”

The subpoena was issued by the House Oversight Committee in April, and it seeks documents related to the FBI’s investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China. The committee has said that it is investigating whether the FBI’s investigation was politically motivated.

Wray has said that the FBI is cooperating with the committee’s investigation, but he has also said that he cannot release certain documents because they are classified.

McCarthy’s threat to hold Wray in contempt comes as the House Oversight Committee is also investigating the FBI’s handling of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The committee has subpoenaed a number of documents from the FBI, and it has also interviewed a number of witnesses, including former FBI Director James Comey.

The FBI has said that it is cooperating with the committee’s investigation, but it has also said that it cannot release certain documents because they are classified.

McCarthy’s threats to hold Wray in contempt have been met with criticism from Democrats, who say that McCarthy is trying to politicize the FBI.

“Kevin McCarthy’s threats to hold Director Wray in contempt are nothing more than a political stunt,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). “The FBI is a nonpartisan law enforcement agency, and it is outrageous that McCarthy would try to use it for his own political gain.”

It remains to be seen whether McCarthy will follow through on his threat to hold Wray in contempt. If he does, it would be the first time that a sitting FBI director has been held in contempt of Congress.
